2. Swinburne University
Introduced by Clare................ of Swinburne University,
-a medium sized TAFE/University with 5 libraries, 74 staff plus casuals, 25,000 users a year.
-Are moving towards 24 hour opening, especially at Hawthorn campus.
-Have 300 laptops for loan.
-Increased library usage by International students ; study in the library for long blocks of time
-Have introduced a roving staff member to answer queries : 1/2 IT and 1/2 library
-Have chronic space issue :high use of libary means crowding of student areas
-Needed to double the number of power points for laptop computers
-Students are moving to hand-held devices, eg. blackberry
Websites : Starbucks blog: Dell Ideas storm: Forrester websiite (www.forrester.com)
-all show that young adults want to take control
23 items : introduced in collaboration with Deakin University
- rolled out in a 12 week program
- encouraged staff participation through prizes (movie tickets when reach 1/2 way point)
- considered as part of staff Performance Appraisals
- Library Wiki had been a 'dead' space - now as part of 23 items staff needed to place a photo of their pet on Wiki.
- so far 80% completion rate
- Has increased commarderie and sharing; social connections beteen staff members
- 23-things activities placed on Staff Roster
-Staff are now able to link with students by talking about : Facebook, blogs, google.docs, and flicka
- 'Second-life' was too slow
- image generations seen as a fun teaching tool
- have student and staff blogs
- wiki is now well used
- loved 'Delicious'

Does this mean Swinburne will be opening 24 hours in a physical sense or just a virtual library?
